n8n allows you to connect applications, APIs, databases and internal systems through automated workflows. Although n8n offers a hosted service, you can also run it on your own infrastructure.
Using an unmanaged VPS for self-hosted n8n gives you control over the server environment, application configuration and workflow data. However, it also means that you are responsible for maintaining and securing the installation.
At Time4VPS, we make the initial deployment easier by offering a self-hosted n8n VPS template. It includes n8n and the main components required to run it, allowing you to create your first workflow without installing everything manually.
What Is an Unmanaged n8n VPS?
An unmanaged VPS is a virtual server that you administer yourself. The hosting provider maintains the physical infrastructure and network, while you manage the operating system, applications and server configuration.
When you run self-hosted n8n on an unmanaged VPS, you are responsible for:
- Server administration
- Operating system and software updates
- Security configuration
- User and SSH access
- Backups and recovery
- Resource monitoring
- n8n configuration
- Workflow creation and troubleshooting
An unmanaged VPS is therefore best suited to developers, system administrators, automation professionals and other users who are comfortable managing a Linux server.
Why Run Self-Hosted n8n on a VPS?
You can install n8n on a local computer, but your workflows may stop whenever the device is turned off, disconnected or restarted. A VPS provides an always-on environment that can remain available for scheduled workflows, webhooks and other automated processes.
Self-hosting n8n on a VPS also provides several practical benefits.
Control Over the Environment
You control the operating system, server configuration, installed software and access permissions. Full root access allows you to adjust the environment according to your technical requirements.
Greater Control Over Workflow Data
Your workflows, credentials and execution data are stored in an environment that you manage. You decide how the server is secured, who can access it and how backups are handled.
Self-hosting does not automatically guarantee security or regulatory compliance. These depend on how the VPS, n8n installation and connected systems are configured and maintained.
Flexible Integrations
n8n can connect cloud applications, databases, APIs and internal tools. Running it on your own VPS gives you more flexibility when working with private services, custom nodes or specialised dependencies.
Scalable Server Resources
The server resources available to n8n depend on your selected VPS plan. If your workflows become more complex or execute more frequently, you can monitor resource use and upgrade the VPS when additional CPU, memory or storage is required.
What Does the Time4VPS n8n Template Include?
Installing self-hosted n8n manually normally requires you to prepare several components. The Time4VPS deployment template provides a prepared environment based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
The setup includes:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- Docker and Docker Compose
- n8n
- PostgreSQL
- Traefik
- HTTPS with a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate
- Automatically generated credentials
- An additional HTTP authentication layer before the n8n interface
This reduces the time needed for the initial installation and helps avoid common configuration errors. You still receive full root access and remain responsible for managing the VPS.
How to Run Self-Hosted n8n on a Time4VPS Unmanaged VPS
The following steps explain how to deploy and access n8n using the Time4VPS template.
Step 1: Choose a Time4VPS VPS
Start by selecting a Time4VPS Linux VPS plan. The appropriate server resources will depend on factors such as:
- The number of workflows
- How frequently they execute
- The amount of data they process
- The number of simultaneous executions
- The applications and APIs being connected
- Any additional services running on the VPS
A smaller environment may be sufficient for testing and simple workflows. Production automations, large datasets and multiple simultaneous executions can require more resources.
Because the VPS is scalable, you can start with a suitable plan and upgrade it as your automation requirements grow.
Step 2: Install the n8n Template
After purchasing and activating your VPS, log in to the Time4VPS Client Area.
Follow these steps:
- Open Services and select VPS.
- Find the relevant server and click Manage.
- Select Install OS.
- Choose n8n (Ubuntu 24.04, Docker) (64-bit).
- Read and accept the installation warning.
- Click Continue.
- Wait approximately 10–20 minutes for the installation to finish.
Installing an operating-system template replaces the existing data on that VPS. Use this option for a new server or confirm that any important information has been backed up before continuing.
The latest instructions are also available in the Time4VPS n8n template guide.
Step 3: Connect to the VPS Through SSH
Once the installation is complete, connect to the server through SSH.
Open a terminal and run:
ssh root@your_server_ip
Replace your_server_ip with the IP address assigned to your Time4VPS server.
If this is your first connection, your SSH client may ask you to confirm the server fingerprint. Verify it before accepting the connection.
For regular server administration, consider creating a separate user with sudo privileges and using SSH keys instead of relying permanently on direct root login.
Step 4: Find Your n8n Login Details
The Time4VPS template automatically generates the credentials required to access the protected n8n interface.
They are stored in:
/root/n8n_logins
To display the file, run:
cat /root/n8n_logins
Find the following values:
traefik_user
traefik_password
Save these credentials in a secure password manager. Do not publish them, include them in scripts or share them through unsecured communication channels.
The file also contains PostgreSQL credentials, keys and tokens used by the installation. You normally do not need to change or use these values when accessing n8n for the first time.
Step 5: Open n8n in Your Browser
Open the hostname assigned to your VPS:
https://your_hostname.time4vps.cloud
Replace the example with the actual hostname shown for your server.
The browser will first display the additional HTTP authentication prompt. Enter the traefik_user and traefik_password values retrieved from the login file.
This authentication layer protects the n8n interface before visitors reach the application login page.
Step 6: Create the n8n Owner Account
After passing the initial authentication, n8n will ask you to create an owner account.
Enter the required information:
- Email address
- First name
- Last name
- A strong and unique password
The owner account is used to access the n8n dashboard, manage workflows and configure application credentials. Its password is separate from your VPS root password and the Traefik HTTP authentication credentials.
Step 7: Check That the Containers Are Running
Because the Time4VPS template uses Docker, you can check the active containers with:
docker ps
The command displays information such as container names, images, status and exposed ports.
If the required containers are running, you can proceed to the n8n dashboard. If a container is stopped or repeatedly restarting, inspect its logs and server resource usage before creating production workflows.
Step 8: Create a Test Workflow
Before connecting important business systems, create a simple test workflow.
In the n8n dashboard:
- Select Create Workflow.
- Add a Manual Trigger node.
- Add an Edit Fields node.
- Connect the two nodes.
- Create a field named message.
- Enter Hello from n8n as its value.
- Execute the workflow.
If the output contains the message, your self-hosted n8n environment is working correctly.
You can then begin creating your own workflows or use a template from the n8n workflow template library. Always review imported templates, credentials, nodes and workflow logic before activating them.
How to Keep Your Self-Hosted n8n VPS Secure
Installing n8n is only the first step. Because this is an unmanaged VPS, security and maintenance remain your responsibility.
Keep the Server and n8n Updated
Regularly install operating-system security updates and keep n8n, Docker and the related containers current. Before an important update, review the release notes and create a working backup.
Updates should first be tested when your workflows support important production processes.
Protect SSH Access
Use SSH keys, restrict administrative access and consider disabling direct root login after creating a separate administrative user. Never expose private SSH keys or reuse weak passwords.
Use HTTPS
Credentials, webhook data and workflow information should not be transmitted over an unencrypted connection. The Time4VPS template uses Traefik and a Let’s Encrypt certificate to provide HTTPS access.
Configure a Firewall Carefully
Only expose ports that are required by the installation. Take care when changing firewall rules remotely because an incorrect rule can block your SSH access or prevent n8n and HTTPS from working.
Back Up Important Data
Create regular backups of your n8n data, PostgreSQL database, credentials and configuration. A backup is useful only if it can be successfully restored, so test your recovery process periodically.
Monitor Server Resources
Check CPU, memory, storage and container status regularly. Workflows that process large files, execute custom code or run simultaneously can consume significant resources.
If the server reaches its resource limits, workflows may slow down, fail or become unavailable. Upgrade the VPS or optimise the workflows when necessary.
Protect Application Credentials
n8n workflows may contain access to important applications and databases. Apply the principle of least privilege when creating API keys and connected accounts. Give each integration only the permissions required for its task.
